Prime Minister Modi reached Washington DC early Thursday for a two-day visit to the United States. During his stay, he is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with US President Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit takes place amid concerns in New Delhi regarding Washington’s new “America First” trade policy.
With the United States continuing to impose tariffs, Prime Minister Modi’s primary objective during the visit is expected to be preventing any trade penalties from Washington.
During their meeting, the two leaders are expected to primarily focus on enhancing India-US collaboration in areas like trade, investment, energy, defense, technology, and immigration.
Apart from sector-specific announcements, the key meeting will be closely observed for its outcomes, as it marks the first interaction between the two leaders since Trump began his second term as US President.
The visit takes place just days after the Trump administration deported 104 Indians, who were restrained with handcuffs and shackles on a military aircraft. This action triggered outrage in India, with the opposition questioning the treatment of migrants.
Prime Minister Modi’s trip to the US follows Trump’s recent decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on global steel and aluminum imports. This measure is expected to impact Indian companies exporting these materials to the US.
India has indicated a more flexible approach to the issue, in contrast to its firm stance during Trump’s first term. According to news agency PTI, New Delhi may contemplate reducing tariffs in at least a dozen sectors if the White House provides certain concessions.
Bilateral trade between India and the US amounted to approximately USD 130 billion last year.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss the broader situation in the Indo-Pacific, the conflict in Ukraine, and developments in West Asia.
What will be the agenda of Prime Minister Modi on his US visit?
When PM Modi reaches the US and meets Donald Trump, he will be only the third world leader to meet the new President. Before Modi, Trump had welcomed Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Japan’s Shigeru Ishiba in the White House.
The meeting of the top leaders of India and the US within a month of Trump’s swearing-in also shows the importance of the relationship between the two countries.
