PM Modi In France- On Wednesday At 4:18 AM (India time), Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a post on Twitter/X stating, “President Macron and I reached Marseille a short while ago.” His post reflected the camaraderie he has shared with the French leader over the years and underscored the significance of his latest visit to France.

Marseille holds particular importance in the political narrative of PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as it was the site where Hindutva icon and freedom fighter VD Savarkar attempted to escape from British colonial captivity. His arrest by the then French authorities and subsequent handover to the British sparked a legal debate on asylum and extradition. Modi also referenced Savarkar in one of his posts.
PM Modi In France- His early morning post also highlighted a distinctive aspect of PM Modi’s visit to France—the time and respect accorded to him by President Macron.
On February 10, the first day of PM Modi’s tour in France, President Macron spent time with the Indian Prime Minister, hosting a dinner in his honor. Their camaraderie was evident the following day at the AI Action Summit, where they co-hosted the event.
Later that day, Modi and Macron jointly hosted the India-France CEOs Forum, emphasizing their shared vision for economic cooperation.

In a remarkable display of friendship, Modi and Macron traveled together in a joint motorcade and shared the same plane en route to Marseille. Upon their arrival, President Macron hosted PM Modi for a working dinner without delay.
PM Modi In France- Their agenda for Wednesday included inaugurating an Indian Consulate in Marseille, touring the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project—an international collaboration on nuclear fusion—and visiting the Marseille port together. The level of proximity and time President Macron dedicated to a visiting world leader is exceptional and has few, if any, precedents.
PM Modi In France- Upon arriving in Marseille, PM Modi paid tribute to the memory of Savarkar, who made a “courageous escape” attempt in the port city.
In one of his posts on X, PM Modi wrote, “Landed in Marseille. In India’s quest for freedom, this city holds special significance. It was here that the great Veer Savarkar attempted a courageous escape.”
He further expressed gratitude, stating, “I also want to thank the people of Marseille and the French activists of that time who demanded that he not be handed over to British custody. The bravery of Veer Savarkar continues to inspire generations!”
Upon his arrival in Marseille, the Indian prime minister was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora.

PM Modi In France- In an early Wednesday morning post, PM Modi stated, “President Macron and I reached Marseille a short while ago. This visit will feature significant programs aimed at strengthening the ties between India and France. The inauguration of the Indian consulate will enhance people-to-people connections. I will also pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who were martyred in the First and Second World Wars.”
During British colonial rule, freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar attempted to escape captivity on July 8, 1910, while being transported to India aboard the British ship Morea for trial.
He is known to have slipped out through the ship’s porthole, swam ashore, and was subsequently captured by the French authorities, who then handed him back to the British. This incident sparked a significant diplomatic dispute, ultimately leading to Savarkar’s sentencing to life imprisonment at Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
This marked PM Modi’s sixth visit to France. As part of the second leg of his two-nation tour, he will proceed to the United States from France.
