New Delhi railway station stampede- The death toll has risen to 18 following a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night. The chaos unfolded when a massive crowd gathered after the announcement of a special train, triggering panic within 15–20 minutes.
Initially, reports suggested a ‘stampede-like’ situation at the railway station. However, Northern Railways’ CPRO dismissed these claims, stating that no stampede had occurred. “It is merely a rumor. Northern Railways was operating two planned special trains for Prayagraj,” the official clarified.
Despite this, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena were the first to confirm the fatalities resulting from the tragic incident.

“Heartbreaking news from New Delhi Railway Station. I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the stampede on the railway platform. My thoughts are with the bereaved families during this difficult time. Praying for the swift recovery of the injured,” Singh wrote in a post on X.
Saxena also acknowledged the unfortunate incident, confirming that there were both casualties and injuries due to “disorder and stampede” at the station.
The situation worsened as a large influx of passengers arrived at the station to board special trains for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Several individuals sustained injuries during the incident. Authorities reported that the sudden surge caused some passengers to faint, which led to rumors of a stampede and further escalated the panic.

Providing further details, police stated that the stampede occurred at 10 p.m., with the casualties including 14 women and three children. Dr. Ritu Saxena, deputy medical superintendent at Lok Nayak Hospital in New Delhi, informed AFP that most fatalities resulted from suffocation.
“They have no visible external injuries. Most likely, they succumbed to hypoxia or possibly a blunt injury, but this can only be confirmed after an autopsy. Eleven others sustained injuries, most of whom are stable and have orthopedic injuries,” she said.
Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah Mourn the Deaths: New Delhi railway station stampede
Shortly after the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to extend his condolences to the families of the victims. “Deeply saddened by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing assistance to all those affected by this tragedy,” he wrote.
On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari also expressed their sorrow over the loss of lives in the stampede.
“Spoke with Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw ji and other concerned officials regarding the accident at New Delhi Railway Station. I also contacted the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and the Delhi Police Commissioner, instructing them to extend all possible assistance. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives. The injured are receiving the necessary medical care, and I wish them a speedy recovery,” Shah stated in his post.
It is important to note that the six-week-long Mahakumbh Mela is considered the most significant event in the Hindu religious calendar. Officials have reported that approximately 500 million devotees have already attended the festival since it commenced last month. However, the event has a history of tragic stampedes.
In 1954, over 400 people lost their lives in a single day of the festival, either by being trampled or drowning, making it one of the deadliest crowd-related disasters worldwide. A tragic stampede also happened in ongoing Mahakumbh 2025 in which 30 people lost their lives
According to reports, Indian Railways has launched a high-level investigation into the incident. Eyewitnesses stated that due to the massive crowd at the station, several passengers fainted from suffocation.
