
India and Qatar Relation- Departing from traditional protocol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani at New Delhi airport on Monday, February 17. The Qatari leader was on a two-day state visit to India, during which he had discussed trade, investment, technology, and other avenues to enhance ties between Doha and Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral discussions with Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday, where they explored trade, investment, and energy while acknowledging the historic trade connections and strong people-to-people ties between their nations.
India and Qatar Relation- Both Countries Agreed to Boost Trade & Investment
India and Qatar Trade & Investment- Both India and Qatar agreed to double bilateral trade to USD 28 billion within the next five years and announced the elevation of their relationship to a strategic partnership. In the presence of Modi and the Amir, two agreements were signed—one establishing the strategic partnership and another revising the double taxation avoidance agreement.

Additionally, India and Qatar signed five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing collaboration in archive management, and fostering ties in youth affairs and sports.
In a media briefing Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, told reporters-
Chatterjee stated that Modi and the Qatari Amir also set a goal to double bilateral trade from the current USD 14 billion to USD 28 billion within the next five years.
During Modi’s visit to Qatar last year, India signed a USD 78 billion agreement to extend LNG imports from the Gulf nation for an additional 20 years, until 2048, at rates lower than the prevailing prices at the time.
India and Qatar Relation- Both Countries Discuss Regional & Global Security
The two leaders PM Modi & Qatar Emir also exchanged views on regional and global matters of mutual interest, including the evolving situation in the Middle East. Discussions covered the Israel-Hamas issue, with both sides conveying their respective positions. “India conveyed its own stance, the Qatari side presented theirs, and we exchanged views,” Chatterjee said when asked whether the West Asia situation was addressed in the talks.
PM Modi and Qatar Emir Condemn Cross Border Terrorism
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism. The two leaders agreed to collaborate in combating the threat through both bilateral and multilateral mechanisms.

In a joint statement released after their discussions, India and Qatar underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in achieving the peaceful resolution of international disputes.
The Amir’s two-day state visit to India on February 17 and 18 reaffirmed the deep friendship and cooperation between the two nations. The leaders expressed confidence that this renewed partnership would continue to strengthen, benefiting both countries’ citizens and contributing to regional and global stability, the statement noted.
The two leaders strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism, and agreed to collaborate in tackling this threat through both bilateral and multilateral mechanisms, the statement said.
They also committed to strengthening cooperation in information and intelligence sharing, exchanging experiences, best practices, and technologies, and enhancing capacity building. Additionally, they agreed to boost collaboration in law enforcement, anti-money laundering efforts, drug trafficking prevention, cybercrime, and other transnational crimes, according to the joint statement.
Earlier in the day, Modi and the Amir engaged in extensive discussions focusing on trade, investments, technology, energy, and people-to-people ties, further reinforcing the longstanding and deep-rooted relationship between India and Qatar.
PM Modi and the Emir of Qatar also explored ways to enhance cooperation in cybersecurity, including preventing the use of cyberspace for terrorism, radicalization, and disrupting social harmony.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that Pm Modi and Qatar’s Emir also shared perspectives on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
