Team India’s chances of securing a second ICC title in consecutive years suffered a major setback on Tuesday as senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the Champions Trophy 2025 due to a back injury sustained during the recent tour of Australia.
The BCCI announced young pacer Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement in the 15-man squad, which was revealed on 18 January. Rana has made an impressive start to his international career across all three formats in the past two-and-a-half months.
With Bumrah unavailable, senior pacer Mohammed Shami is likely to spearhead the bowling attack, with either Arshdeep Singh or Harshit Rana selected as the second frontline pacer. Since seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya is available, India does not require a third specialist fast bowler, enabling them to include three spinners, including all-rounders.
Wrist spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who has been in exceptional form in T20Is, is also part of the squad. He made his ODI debut against England in Cuttack on Sunday and returned to the Indian team during the T20I series against Bangladesh in October. Since then, he has been a prolific wicket-taker, including in the four-match series in South Africa in November.
Chakravarthy replaces opening batter Jaiswal in champion trophy 2025, who has been moved to the non-traveling substitutes along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube. Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut against England in Nagpur on Thursday, was dismissed for 15.
In Jaiswal’s absence, skipper Rohit Sharma will open the innings alongside in-form vice-captain Shubman Gill, who has registered consecutive fifties in the ongoing ODI series against England. Gill also shared a 136-run opening partnership in Cuttack, setting the stage for India’s successful chase of a 305-run target.
Team India has also decided to retain KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as the two wicket keepers in the squad, meaning Sanju Samson will have to wait longer for his maiden appearance in an ICC event. The Men in Blue are expected to continue with Rahul as their primary wicketkeeper, given his experience handling the role during the 2023 ICC World Cup.

Champions Trophy 2025, Non-travelling substitutes players:
Mohammed Siraj, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube. These three players will also travel to Dubai as and when requirements come.
